Synopsis

Chicago follows the story of Roxie Hart, a chorus girl who dreams of becoming a vaudeville star. She cheats on her sweet but dim-witted husband called Amos, but when her lover tries to put an end to their affair, she kills him in a bout of rage. Getting locked up in the Cook County Jail seems like the end to Roxie’s dreams of fame, but her sentence is actually her golden ticket to stardom. When her lawyer, the smooth-talking Billy Flynn, helps Roxie assemble a defense, she earns the press’s sympathy and gets her face plastered on the cover of every newspaper in Chicago. While Roxie is in jail, she meets Velma Kelly, an established vaudeville star who killed her husband and sister. Even though the women are initially rivals as Roxie steals Velma’s lawyer and her spotlight, they soon form an unlikely alliance.

Creative Team

Bob Fosse penned the book; the story was adapted from a play of the same name by Maurine Dallas Watkins. She was a journalist who based Chicago on real crimes she reported on at the start of her career.

WALTER BOBBIE helms the show as Director, ANN REINKING takes on the role of Choreographer, JOHN LEE BEATTY wears the hat of Set Designer. Chicago features jazzy, vaudevillian songs composed by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The musical has become known and loved around the world for its ever-rotating roster of stars. Stage actors, huge movie stars, singers, reality TV stars, internet personalities, and even comedians have lent their talents to Chicago on Broadway. For this star-studded production BIANCA MARROQUÍN plays Roxie Hart, LANA GORDON plays Velma Kelly, PETER LOCKYER plays Billy Flynn, PAUL VOGT plays Amos Hart, JENNIFER FOUCHÉ plays Matron “Mama” Morton, and D. History and Awards

Chicago opened its doors on Broadway in 1975 and ran for a whopping 936 performances in just over two years. In 1996, New York City Center launched an Off-Broadway revival as part of its Encores! program, which later transferred to Broadway. That show is the one still running on Broadway today, 28 years later.

The original Broadway cast of Chicago included Gwen Verdon as Roxie Hart, Chita Rivera as Velma Kelly, Jerry Orbach as Billy Flynn, Barney Martin as Amos Hart, Mary McCarty as Matron “Mama” Morton, and Michael O’Haughey as Mary Sunshine. The 1996 revival first starred Ann Reinking as Roxie Hart, Chita Rivera as Velma Kelly, James Naughton as Billy Flynn, Joel Grey as Amos Hart, Marcia Lewis as Matron “Mama” Morton, and David Sabella-Mills as Mary Sunshine.

In 2002, Chicago was adapted into a popular movie musical featuring Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly, Richard Gere as Billy Flynn, Queen Latifah as Matron “Mama” Morton, John C. Reilly as Amos Hart, and Christine Baranski as Mary Sunshine. The movie took home Best Picture at the 2003 Academy Awards (as well as five other trophies), being known as the first movie musical to do so since Oliver! in the sixties.
